Clarifying Hair Treatment

After spending almost a year and a half on active duty orders, my hair was extremely damaged! I had so many broken hairs and dead ends from wearing my hair in the “Classic female military bun”. I must have been clueless… using the wrong hair accessories and not to mention, my hair never dried!

I have been home for a little over a year now, and I have had to cut at least 8 inches off of my hair! I have tried so many conditioning products that have guaranteed to help my hair become healthy again! It is expensive and I haven’t found anything that I felt really helped. With that being said, everyone knows that you can deep condition and use “damaged hair” products, but it creates build up!

I only wash my hair every other day, and if I can manage it, every three days. It is really common this day in age with all of the dry shampooing options available! I also don’t want to over work my hair (causing more damage) and it allows time for my natural scalp oils to produce new, healthy hair!

A few months ago it was time for a trim, and I just felt like my hair was continuing to get worse… so dry and ugly! When I was talking to the hair stylist, she looked at my hair and said, “No, your hair is healthy, it is not dry… it just has so much build up of product that it looks dry”! Who knew… I felt a little relief, but she started asking about how often I use a clarifying product on my hair and what other products I use. I explained that I don’t use a clarifying product, I just do a double shampooing when I wash my hair. This is when my hair life changed forever.

This is beauty secret that has been around for a long time, but this was the first I had heard of it! I can’t begin to count up how much money I have spent on hair products, treatments and so on! If you are a regular visitor to my blog, you would know that I am all about DIY, quality products and saving cash… SQUIRREL!

After I got home from the hair salon, I put the clarifying hair treatment to work! It smells as you apply it, but you will rinse it out and wash your hair as you normally would. The results were amazing!

Ingredients:

  • 1 C White Vinegar
  • 1 C Water

The first thing you want to do is mix up your ingredients! This clarifying hair treatment uses a 1 to 1 ratio of white vinegar and water. I use a glass mixing bowel with a spout so I can easily pour it into a bottle. The bottle I use is 16oz, so the treatment mixture will fit perfectly. The bottle I use is glass. They are reasonably priced at $19.99 for six bottles! I use these for my DIY cleaning products too! The bonus is that they come with chalk labels! I love extras and freebies!

Hold your bottle over the sink with one hand and carefully pour the liquid mixture into the glass bottle with your other hand. (I recommend doing this over a sink for easy cleanup if there is a spill.) The mixture will be just enough to fill the bottle. Remember to leave space for the the sprayer pump to fit into the glass bottle, so try not to overfill.  Add the sprayer and ensure that is on snug!

I recommend to apply this product in the bathroom. I usually do this over the sink. You want to spray your hair, ensuring that covers all areas. Depending on the length of your hair, you may want to try to just use the drain plug in the sink, and dump the treatment mixture of over your head from the mixing bowl and dip your head into the sink to ensure you really work it all in.

Once the treatment has been applied, put your hair up for five minutes! I typically will put it up in a bun and set a timer.

After the five minutes is up, you are ready to rinse it out. Wash your hair and style as normal. You will be impressed at how clean and fresh your hair looks and feels!

Tips and Tricks:

  • I apply this treatment once a month, you never want to “Over clarify”.
  • I found that the best time to apply the treatment is prior to a shower and on a day off, so I have the time to complete the treatment.
  • The treatment does smell as you apply it, but it will rinse out and the scent of vinegar will disappear!
