After several months of my boys asking for a dog, I finally gave in. I researched for a few months trying to find out the best fit for our family. I wanted a dog that would be great with the kids, guests, a protector and one that could go outdoors with us.
Growing up in family of Veterans, and being in the service myself, I have a love for the outdoors and working out. So I needed a dog that is active, a runner and one that can go hiking, camping and anywhere I needed him to go with me!
On a road trip to Denver for the 4th of July weekend, we found our new family member, Blu! (Blu Jet Freedom Fighter- Hints the holiday weekend and family history!)
Blu is a blue Weimaraner. He is still a youngster, almost a four-month old giant! He is in the teething stage and is going through toys, and many other non-preferred items (homework agendas, backpacks, dog beds and so much more very quickly!) Trying to find out what he prefers was hit and miss at first, but I learned quickly that he loves the crinkling sound and the crunch of water bottles.
The crinkling toys are great but they never seem to last long. The guts of the toy get mangled and stop crinkling and then he is left with a great toy shell! I didn’t want to just throw my money away! SQUIRREL!
I would recycle and reinvent this toy for Blu!
Growing up I spent a lot of time with my grandparents, learning so many trades, one of which was sewing! I was able to pull stitching, sew in Velcro (hook and loop), add a water bottle and put that toy back to good use!
Items you will need:
- Recycled Dog Toy
- Velcro (Hook and Loop)
- Water Bottle
- Thread and needle for sewing
- Scissors
Step1: Take the dog toy and pull the stitching from one side. You will want to clean out any insides that may exist.
Step 2: Cut the Velcro to fit the opening that you made. Sew the Velcro into the inside of dog toy. Ensure that your stitching is taunt and able to withhold the strength needed for the Velcro.
Step 3: Get an empty water bottle, remove the label and I leave air in the bottle and put the cap on tightly. Insert it into the dog toy!
Happy DIY-ing! This is a great idea to get your thoughts and ideas flowing. There are so many ways to recycle and create toys and goods for your four legged family member!
