I LOVE the smell of bleach- it registers something to my brain that the area is now SANITIZED! However, a few years ago, I “Over-bleached” (if that’s even a thing) cleaning a bathroom and my lungs literally burned! It was that moment I knew why bleach originally was sold in small quantities by pharmacies… SQUIRREL!
If you have young boys, you know bathroom cleaning can be a dirty job! I researched safe non-toxic disinfectant cleaning agents… I discovered that hydrogen peroxide was the answer! It is also considered to be an environmentally safe alternative to chlorine bleach. Mainly due to the fact that it can break down into two elements, water and oxygen!
This cleaning agent works really well! I use a dark, amber colored glass spray bottle storing one in the bathroom and one in my kitchen. When you store your hydrogen peroxide cleaner, You ALWAYS want to use a dark colored bottle… If this cleaning agent is left in the direct sunlight it will turn into regular ol’ H2O! (Now you know whey peroxide is sold in brown bottles!) Remember, I’ve discussed this previously, but plastic will absorb the essential oils and other products that you may add to your DIY cleaners. The glass spray bottles are easy to sanitize and reuse! I also purchased the amber glass bottles from Amazon. They work really well and I have not encountered any issues with the sprayer. Actually, I was impressed with the sprayer… it’s not weak and when I spray the cleaner… it feels like the product flows freely with ease. They are 16oz bottles and reasonably priced at $16.99 for six bottles!
During bathroom cleaning, I usually spray down the toilet and I can instantly see the cleaning power go to work. I wipe it all down and… ta-da! So easy and a super time saver! No scrubbing necessary! I also have to say that it does a fabulous job at deodorizing areas as well. No more boy smells lingering in my bathrooms! (Mom joke that most of you will understand!)
I also use this to disinfect and sanitize countertops, tables, floors (if needed) and the opportunities are endless!
Ingredients to make your own cleaning Agent:
- Hydrogen Peroxide- at least 3%
- Water
- Dark colored bottle (You can just add a sprayer to the hydrogen peroxide bottle)
- Essential oil (Optional- most common is lemon)
This powerful cleaning agent uses a 1 to 1 ratio of hydrogen peroxide and water. I use a glass mixing bowel with a spout so I can easily pour it into a bottle. The bottle I use is 16oz, so I use 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide and one cup of water. After you add the ingredients into the mixing bowl, add a few drop of the essential oil (optional). Set it aside.
Next, you want to prep your bottle. If you are adding a label, I recommend that you do so prior to adding the cleaning agent.
Hold your bottle over the sink with one hand and carefully pour the liquid mixture into the glass bottle with your other hand. (I recommend doing this over a sink for easy cleanup if there is a spill.) The mixture will be just enough to fill the bottle. Remember to leave space for the the sprayer pump to fit into the glass bottle, so try not to overfill. Add the sprayer and ensure that is on snug!

Give the bottle a good shake and you can get to cleaning immediately! This new cleaning agent will save you time and money! Not to mention, your health!
Happy DIY-ing,
Cheers!
