Citrus Vinegar All-purpose Cleaner

This recipe has been in high demand! It is easy to make, disinfects, smells fresh and works amazingly!

I started using this when I was fed up with buying expensive household all purpose cleaners. I remember scrubbing my floors by hand and I literally had chemical burns on my knees and my hands were so dried out all of the time! Needless to say, the cleaners were harsh on my skin, lungs, my kids and animals!

SQUIRREL! I started researching to see what safe alternatives were out there! I wanted something that worked… I didn’t want something that was a DIY cleaner with no results. I wanted real results!

After making this product I was hooked. It is made with vinegar, so it is safe on countertops, sinks, and many other things. It helps get rid of water spots and grimy yucky messes! It is safe around the kids, animals and it doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. I also love the look of the bottles- they are elegant and look great in my cabinets. If you are anything like me, you clean a lot- so why not look good while doing it?

I always recommend that you use glass spray bottles for your DIY cleaning products. Plastic will absorb the essential oils and other products that you may add to your DIY cleaners. Also, the glass spray bottles are easy to sanitize and reuse! I purchased mine from Amazon. They work really well and I have not encountered any issues with the sprayer. Actually, I was impressed with the sprayer… it’s not weak and when I spray the cleaner… it feels like the product flows freely with ease. They are 16oz bottles and reasonably priced at $19.99 for six bottles! The bonus is that they come with chalk labels! I love extras and freebies!

Let’s get started!

Ingredients:

• White vinegar
• Water
• Rosemary (2-3 stems)
• Lemon or Orange rinds

The recipe I make is a 1 to 1 ratio of water and vinegar (If the vinegar scent is too strong, use a 2 part water/ 1 part vinegar ratio). If you are filling one 16oz bottle, you will need one cup of white vinegar and one cup of water. I add both ingredients to a glass mixing bowl with a pour spout and stir them together for a minute with a spoon. This will make it easy to pour into the glass bottle. Set it aside.

Next, take your 16oz glass spray bottle and insert the rosemary and lemon or orange rinds through the top. If you are planning on adding a label, I recommend that you do so prior to adding the liquid mixture.

Now that the glass bottle is prepped, hold it over the sink with one hand and carefully pour the liquid mixture into the glass bottle with your other hand. (I recommend doing this over a sink for easy cleanup if there is a spill.) The mixture will be just enough to fill the bottle. Remember to leave space for the the sprayer pump to fit into the glass bottle, so try not to overfill. Add the sprayer and ensure that is on snug!

Shake up the glass bottle to mix everything together. The all purpose citrus vinegar cleaner will need rest for 4-6 days prior to use. This will allow the citrus from the rinds and the scent of the rosemary to be absorbed by the white vinegar and provide you that extra cleaning power!

Price Comparison:

Household cleaners can range from a few dollars upwards of $10.00 or more depending on brands, organic cleaners etc.

I purchase my vinegar from Costco- 2x 1 gal containers for $3.99. The lemon or orange can be purchased from any produce department for a minimal cost- (unless you buy it in bulk). Not to mention, if you have kids or a large family- you may have them readily available!

The rosemary I clipped off a bush in my front yard, but that should not cost more than a few dollars. I recommend that you look around your neighborhood and see if anyone has a rosemary bush. Find one? Ask your neighbor, most likely they will not mind you taking a few clippings. I am not responsible for any neighbor feud over “borrowing” rosemary.

Overall, you will have enough white vinegar to make 32 bottles of cleaner and a minimal cost for the other ingredients. I have saved on average $50.00 per year! Priceless extras- my skin is healthier- no chemical burns or dried out hands, my lungs do not burn and the kids and pets are SAFE!

Now your home will be fresh and clean and you will look fab doing it!

I look forward to your feedback and ideas that you may have!

    1. That is a great question! Vinegar is a preservative so that should not be a concern. However, I use one 16oz bottle of the citrus vinegar cleaning agent per week so I have never encountered any issues. I hope this helps!
